About the Peak Locomotive Company Ltd

The Peak Locomotive Company Ltd has quite a history in diesel locomotive preservation beginning in 1981 with the purchase of Class 44 D4 Great Gable. She was the first privately preserved mainline diesel electric locomotive and has operated regularly at the Midland Railway Centre as well as visiting other railways and events.

Since 1981, the Company has attracted new shareholders to finance the acquisition of Class 46 number 46045 in 1992, Class 45 number 45041 named Royal Tank Regiment in 1996 and Class 45 number 45108 in 2008, making the organisation unique in owning one of each class and sub-class of Peak locomotive. To support the maintenance and operation of their locomotives, the Company has collected together a substantial library of technical information, special tooling and spare parts as well as an historic archive collection of 'Peak' related publications, artefacts, photographs and memorabilia for all classes of 'Peak' locomotives. The Company also encourages and assists fellow 'Peak' locomotive owners.

Shareholders come from all walks of life but share the same desire to maintain the history of the 'Peaks' by active preservation of the Company's locomotives. Share ownership is available to like-minded people who admire the 'Peaks' and wish to see them continue in regular private operation. They pay monthly instalments that build up to buy a £250 share in the Company and receive free copies of the supporter's group newsletter, Great Gable News. Its Memorandum & Articles of Association binds the Company and the Directors and Company Secretary manages its affairs. It places no further obligation on shareholders once they have joined the Company but benefits if shareholders take an active role assisting in the maintenance and operation of the locomotives or support this work by buying additional shares by monthly instalment.

Alternatively, many Peak enthusiasts choose to open a membership subscription to the Great Gable Club which is the informal supporting group for the Company. Club members can follow the lives of our four 'Peaks' without share ownership in the Company. An information sheet on Club membership is available, as are share application forms. If you have any specific questions regarding the Company and Club please contact us at any time.
