45133
Updated 2/4/11
45133 spent the winter months inside the diesel shed at Swanwick and has seen the framework underneath the floor plates behind the cab doors cleaned back to bare metal and repainted. The internal radiator covers have been removed to allow the drip trays found under the radiators to be cleaned and repainted. In addition, the drainage holes through the radiator settling tanks have been cleaned out. A replacement battery cell (provided under the battery warranty) has been fitted and the loco’s batteries charged.
45133 entered traffic on 27th July 1961 and the weekend of 14th/15th May has been booked to celebrate 50 years since the introduction of the loco into traffic. It is planned for 45133 to haul services at the Midland Railway-Butterley on both days of the weekend. The following weekend should see 45133 take part in the MR-B diesel gala.
Updated 3/3/11
45133 took part in the MRB Sulzer BR Blue diesel gala which was held over the weekend of 2nd/3rd October and it was planned for the loco to haul services at the railway the following weekend. Unfortunately a lack of fuel meant that the loco only just managed to complete its booked services over the diesel gala weekend.
The loco was moved into the diesel shed in late November to allow work to be undertaken on the cab doors. The floor plates under the cab doors suffer from a build up of debris, which raises the floor plate slightly making opening the doors awkward. The doors were removed to allow the floor plates to be taken up and all of the debris cleaned from under the floor plates. The linoleum on the cab floor plates is to be replaced as it has worn through in some places. The radiator fan area is to be cleaned and repainted and a battery cell is to be replaced as a faulty one was discovered. With the batteries still being under warranty a replacement has already been delivered.
Updated 7/10/10
45133 had its batteries checked and charged after suffering flat batteries. A defective cell was found and a replacement ordered under warranty from the suppliers. Some smaller jobs have been completed such as sorting out the locos horn which only gave one tone at number one end (pipe scale was discovered in one of the main reservoirs), a crankcase door retaining stud was replaced with one taken from the groups spare power unit (ex. 45058) and fresh fuel filters have been fitted.
The loco was used on Sunday 1st August on all of the day’s services due to unavailable steam locos or DMUs. Tuesday 10th August saw the loco again used on all of the days services due to unavailable steam locos and on Sunday 15th August the loco worked in top and tail formation with steam loco 6233 Duchess of Sutherland. The Duchess is prohibited from running round services being too large for one of the run around loops and is therefore only used in top and tail mode with another loco. 15th August was member’s day for 6233 and 45133 was used to haul the day’s services east from Hammersmith to Riddings, the steam loco hauling services westbound. 45133 took part in the MRB diesel gala held over the weekend of 2nd/3rd October.
Updated 8/8/10
45133 was used to take the crane up to the Swanwick top shed to enable a boiler lift on 80080 but other than this has not seen any work. The loco has had a few minor jobs completed on it and it was almost called into service when D4 failed on its test run on Sunday 18th July, but when a start of the loco was attempted, it was found to have flat batteries.
Updated 3/6/10
45133 hauled services at the MRC diesel and steam weekend of 17th/18th April as well as featuring at the MRC’s Ivor the engine event the following weekend. The loco then headed for the Swanage Railway on the South coast as a last minute replacement for the unavailable 33035 at the railways diesel gala.
On Tuesday 4th May, 47580 ran light engine from Carnforth as 0Z56 departing 15 minutes early at 04:30 heading for the Barrow Hill to collect 56101 and the MRC to collect 45133 and 31271 before heading for Kidderminster. An early departure from Barrow Hill and the MRC saw the convoy of 56101+45133+31271 travel via Toton, Burton on Trent, Bescot and Stourbridge arriving at Kidderminster on time to collect 50035.
The following day 0Z56 departed Kidderminster on time at 08:30 behind 47580 with 56101+45133+31271+50035 in tow running via Worcester, Cheltenham Spa, Bristol Parkway, Westbury, Salisbury, Southampton and Poole before arriving at Swanage again exactly on-time.
45133 then took part in the 3 days of the Swanage diesel gala’s intensive timetable, the first class 45/1 on the railway. Over the weekend 45133 hauled a few shuttle services between Norden and Harmans Cross hauling a southern region 4VEP E.M.U. which made for some interesting pictures. 45133 did itself proud during the gala and never missed a beat operating reliably flying the flag for peaks.
The return convoy from Swanage, 0Z97 departed Swanage on Tuesday 18th May with 47580 hauling 37264+45133+31271+50035 to Kidderminster via Salisbury, Westbury, Bristol Parkway and Worcester. Faultless running following the on time departure at 08:15 gave an on time arrival at Kidderminster at 15:20 where 50035 was detached from the convoy. The following day 47580 hauled the convoy from Kidderminster to the MRC via Stourbridge, Bescot, Tamworth, Burton on Trent and Toton. Departure from Kidderminster was on time but a 30 minute early arrival was recorded at the MRC at 13:00.
45133 then took part in the MRC diesel gala over the hot and sunny weekend of 22nd/23rd May alongside 08331, 08590, 14901, 20048, 31206, 31271, 37264, D212 and 47401.

45133 has had the cab roof vents sealed internally, new brushes fitted to the traction motors and a general bogie examination before being examined for movement to the Mid Norfolk Railway on Thursday 11th March. The Electric Train Heat system was successfully checked over on Sunday 14th March. 45133 has only provided ETH on a couple of occasions since it was preserved and the Mid Norfolk Railway gave another opportunity. 45133 was hauled in the convoy to the Mid Norfolk Railway on Wednesday 17th March (see details in the D182 section for the move to/from the Mid Norfolk Railway) and hauled its first service on the line on Friday 19th March from Wymondham to Dereham with 26007 dead on the rear. It is thought that some 18 years had passed since 45133 last provided ETH to coaches (a dining train at the Midland Railway Centre) but the locos ETH system proved to be in working order. 45133 matched the railways BR Blue/Grey coaches perfectly and took you back in time to the 1980’s when

45133 is having its cab roof vents sealed to stop water entering the cabs through the roof vents. The roof vents have been removed, the vent holes have been blanked off and sealed, then the external vent covers refitted. Inside the cabs, the roof lining is being replaced as required. All of the traction motors have been examined and 5 have been stripped of their carbon brushes for new replacements to be fitted. The traction motor brush boxes are also being cleaned as far as possible without removal. In readiness for the locos visit to the Mid Norfolk Railways diesel gala (Friday 19th – Sunday 21st March) a general bogie exam is in progress.

45133 was collected by 56311 on 30th September along with 31108 and was hauled to the Nene Valley Railway as 0Z57 13:00 Butterley – Yarwell Mill. The move ran via Toton, Nottingham, Grantham and
On Friday 2nd October 45133 (crewed by a Peak Locomotive Company train crew as the Class 45/1 Preservation Society had no-one available) hauled the 08:30 Wansford to Peterborough and 09:07 return service. On the Friday of the event, services were only working between Wansford and
On both Saturday 3rd October and Sunday 4th October 45133 was booked to haul the same services. The loco was attached to the rear of the first service to Yarwell Junction, and then hauled the 09:52 from Yarwell Junction to
45133 was returned to the Midland Railway – Butterley on Friday 9th October in a convoy hauled by 47270. 0Z57 departed Yarwell Mill at 13:45 with 45133, 31271 and 50008 in tow heading for Swanwick. The convoy ran via Peterborough, Grantham, Nottingham and Toton where 45133 and 31271 were dropped off. Following the locos return to Swanwick Junction work has progressed on the removal of the cab roof vents to allow them to be repaired and sealed to stop water entering the cabs through the vents. Attention to a couple of air leaks that came to light whilst the loco was at the Nene Valley Railway is also planned.

45133 hauled services at the MRC’s Works Open Day event which was held over the August Bank Holiday weekend. On both Saturday 29th and Bank Holiday Monday 31st August 45133 was used to haul the 10:10 Butterley to Riddings and 10:36 Riddings to Hammersmith as far as Swanwick Junction. In the afternoon of both days 45133 hauled the 11:58 service from Riddings to Hammersmith forward from Swanwick Junction to Hammersmith piloting steam loco 6233. At Hammersmith 45133 ran round leaving the steam loco on the rear and hauled the 12:52 Hammersmith to Riddings. 6233 then hauled the service from Riddings to Hammersmith, with 45133 being removed at Swanwick Junction and running light engine to the shed after the service train had departed. The only problem encountered over the two days running was one of the handrails came away from the loco body making getting into the cab through this door a little more interesting. This has subsequently been welded back into place.
Work over the summer months on 45133 has included removing, stripping, cleaning and refitting the milometer which records the locos mileage since its last type change due to water ingress into the mechanism.
The straight air brake has been swapped with a spare at number 1 end and the AWS units in each cab have been exchanged although the replacements are not working correctly. The loco was found to be loosing its coolant during a routine inspection and investigation revealed a couple of leaking radiator elements which were changed.
45133 hauled services at the D4 50th anniversary event at the MRC over the weekend of 26th/27th September. On Saturday the loco worked services top and tailed with 45041, with 45133 hauling services from Hammersmith to Riddings. On Sunday the formation was reversed with 45041 and 45133 again top and tailing services, but with 45133 hauling the trains from Riddings to Hammersmith. When D4 was declared a failure, 45133 was removed from the rear of the 11:42 Hammersmith to Riddings at Swanwick Junction and attached to D4 which had failed while hauling the 11:48 Riddings to Hammersmith, but had been pushed into Swanwick Junction station by D182. This made a good load for 45133 to handle, with a trailing load of D4, 5 coaches and D182 (which was on the rear of the train). Throughout Sunday 27th 45133 carried the name Newmarketeer which had been carried by 45130 for approximately 6 weeks in 1978. The wooden nameplate had been made in a similar style as other peak nameplates and like 45022 Lytham St. Annes, has no regimental crest.
45133 has been invited to the Nene Valley diesel gala (Thursday 1st – Sunday 4th October) in the place of 50007, which is unable to attend the event due to and air leak that could not be repaired in time. The loco received an ultrasonic axle exam on Tuesday 15th September, which it passed. The certificate is valid for 3 years unless the loco has a derailment and allows it to be towed over the national network.
Updated 3/8/09
45133 stepped in to haul the 11:15, 14:00 and 16:15 services from Butterley on Sunday 19th July, the rostered loco 33201 was not available. The loco is part way through an engine room repaint and has spent some time recently over a pit to allow the greasing of the axle boxes and traction motors to be completed. The brake hangers and traction motors still need to be cleaned. 45133 is expected to work trains at the D4 50th Anniversary event at the MRC over the weekend of 26th/27th September.
Updated 6/6/09
45133 had the fault that was only allowing it to move in one direction on 29th March traced and repaired and went on a successful test run from Swanwick Junction to Riddings and return on Sunday 12th April. 45133 hauled its first passenger services since 29th October 2005 at the MRC diesel gala which was held over the weekend of 25th/26th April.
Updated 4/4/09
45133 has been fitted with a new set of Crompton batteries which have been given an equalising charge. Before the batteries were fitted, the battery boxes were stripped and painted with acid resistant paint. The battery tray rollers were also removed, cleaned and lubricated in the hope that the trays will slide in and out easier. The main battery connecting cables were modified before a start of the loco was attempted. 45133 was successfully started on Sunday 29th March but the loco would only move in one direction, indicating a problem with the reverser. Engine room painting and an on-going C exam is keeping the restoration team busy. It is planned for 45133 to head its first passenger services since 29th October 2005 at the MRC diesel gala at the end of April.
Updated 1/2/09
The engine room painting of 45133 has been put on hold due to the damp weather but the battery boxes are in the process of been repainted with acid resistant paint in readiness for the fitting of a new set of batteries in the Spring.
Updated 5/12/08
45133 has had its red bufferbeams repainted black. The batteries cannot hold sufficient charge to start the loco and when checking the batteries it was discovered that some 10% were completely life expired and another 20% or so not much better. The knowledge that all of the batteries were fitted at the same time and are therefore all of a similar age has led the group to investigate the purchase a complete new set of 96 cells. Other work has been on the loco recently includes some tidying up since the summer repaint and finishing off of some of the longer outstanding jobs on the loco. Plans for the loco over the winter include an equipment exam and some engine room painting.
