Updated 3/3/11
45112 The Royal Army Ordinance Corps can be found in the yard at Barrow Hill and is drained of coolant and missing several battery cells although a return to traffic would not take too long.

45112 The Royal Army Ordinance Corps was drained of coolant during November and other than frequent charging of the locos batteries no work has been undertaken on the loco. 45112 remains in the yard at Barrow Hill in the company of 45060 Sherwood Forester as well as sheeted over 45105.

45112 The Royal Army Ordnance Corps has not been used as the ETH supply for the Cargo-D air conditioned coaches or for shunting around the Nemesis shed at Barrow Hill recently as some of the curves on the pit road are a little too tight for the loco. 47488 has been used as the ETH supply/large shunter in its place. It is still intended to fit OTMR to 45112 but the loco currently resides in the yard at Barrow Hill waiting its turn to be worked on behind 31128 which has just been OTMR fitted and 47375 which is having missing OTMR bits and other electrical bits fitted.

45112 The Royal Army Ordinance Corps continues to see use at Barrow Hill as an ETH supply for the Cargo-D air conditioned coaches based there as well as being used for shunts when the load is too much for 73134. Since the loco’s AVR has been tested and the Alternator field circuit connected up the right way, many of the problems the loco displayed at the Dartmoor Railway have gone although an earth fault remains.

45112 The Royal Army Ordnance Corps is being used as an Electric Train Heat source for testing coaches at Barrow Hill. Whilst the starting problem with the loco (the loco fires and the engine turns over but shuts down when the start lever is released) has not been found and fixed, the loco is currently starting without any problems. It was thought that one of the electrical machines (traction motor blowers, compressors etc.) that run immediately that the loco is started could have been causing the starting problems. Initially all of the fuses for these machines were removed and one by one refitted as a subsequent start of the loco was successful. Unfortunately the starting problem did not occur whilst this testing was undertaken. 45112 has had an electronic Automatic Voltage Regulator (AVR) manufactured to replace its existing one, in case the locos problems are with the AVR. When Brush works at Loughborough converted some class 47’s into class 57/0’s a few years ago they designed a new electronic type of AVR for the 57/0s using an AVR from D123 as the guide. 45112 is well down the queue for the fitting of OTMR to allow it to resume its mainline career but this is still planned and a set of OTMR equipment has been delivered.

45112 The Royal Army Ordnance Corps was used to test the ETH on some coaches over Christmas at Barrow Hill. The loco has been suffering with starting problems recently where loco fires and turns over okay, but it shuts down immediately the start lever is released. As a consequence, a fault finding plan was required. It was thought that the problem with the loco was that it shuts down when the generator is loaded up, so the problem maybe with one of the systems that starts once the start lever is released. As a consequence the fuses that allow the traction motor blowers and compressors were removed and the loco started without a problem and kept running. This allowed the coach ETH supply to be tested successfully. To date one compressor fuse has been put back and the loco starts and continues to run okay. Further fault finding is needed, but other work priorities mean that the loco is still down the queue for the fitting of OTMR. It is planned for the loco to be used test ETH on further coaches as necessary.

45112 The Royal Army Ordnance Corps currently has starting problems at Barrow Hill which are proving to be difficult to get to the bottom of. It had been hoped to use 45112 as an electric train heat supply for some coaches at Barrow Hill but with some of the curves around the site a little tight for a peak so 47488 has been used in its place. I am told that it is still planned for 45112 to be fitted with OTMR and return to the mainline but with Nemesis (the company that owns/looks after the majority of the Heritage locos that were associated with the former FM Rail) setting up work flows with other mainline companies, 45112 is not top of the list for maintenance.
