5060 Sherwood Forester was returned to Barrow Hill from the East Lancs diesel gala on Monday 12th July with 33108 by D444.

 Updated 8/8/10

45060 Sherwood Forester was invited to the East Lancs Railway Diesel Gala alongside other Barrow Hill resident 33108. D444 ran light engine from the Severn Valley Railway on Tuesday 29th June, collected 47765 and 56097 from the GCR (N) before heading North to Barrow Hill. Departure from Barrow Hill was at 14:30 and 0Z49 consisting of D444+33108+45060+47765+56097 ran via Derby, Uttoxeter, Crewe, Stoke, Stockport and Brewery Junction to Castleton with a booked arrival of 19:31.

On 2nd July 45060 hauled its first passenger service for almost 14 months, working the 12:05 Heywood to Rawtenstall forward from Bury. At Rawtenstall the loco ran round and hauled the 13:36 service to Heywood, the first time 45060 had hauled a passenger service over the ski-jump (just outside of Bury) and up towards Heywood. When 45060 last visited the ELR in July 2002, the 4 mile Heywood extension was not open for public services.

Of the 3 sets of passenger coaches in use at the diesel gala, one was a set painted blue and grey, and with 45060 at the head of these coaches it was like turning the clock back. 45060 performed very well over the 3 days of the event and received many favourable comments from both those driving the loco as well as those travelling behind it.

Due to a shortage of available steam locos the weekend after the diesel gala, 3 of the visiting locos (45060, 47765 and D444) were allocated to work services on Saturday 10th July and 33108 (with 2 steam locos that arrived on Saturday evening) was allocated to work on Sunday 11th July. 45060 started its day’s services hauling the first train of the day to Heywood at 09:45 and finished by working the 16:30 departure from Rawtenstall to Bury.

The return journey to Barrow Hill was made on Monday 12th July with D444 hauling 33108+45060+47765+56097 as 0Z50 the 09:55 Heywood to Barrow Hill. A right time departure saw the convoy run via Brewery Junction, Denton Junction, Stockport, Stoke, Uttoxeter and Derby. The convoy ran to time throughout with 33108+45060 being dropped off at Barrow Hill at 14:37 before D444 continued to the GCR (N) to drop off 47765+56097.

45060 Sherwood Forester and 45105 both remain drained of coolant and protected from the weather in the yard at Barrow Hill whilst the groups volunteers work on the restoration of 33035. The class 33 is inside the roundhouse at Barrow Hill and is booked to appear at the Swanage diesel gala which is been held 7th – 9th May. 45112 The Royal Army Ordinance Corps is also drained of coolant and rests in the yard at Barrow Hill.

Updated 3/8/09

45060 Sherwood Forester has relaxed at Barrow Hill since its trip to the Swanage Railway in May and 45105 remains sheeted over in the yard at Barrow Hill whilst the team at Barrow Hill have concentrated their efforts on the restoration of 33035.

Updated 6/6/09

45060 Sherwood Forester was started up following its generator repairs on Saturday 11th April. The loco was started up again two days later and ran for 90 minutes. On Saturday 18th April 45060 successfully completed light engine test and on Saturday 2nd May 45060 hauled a couple of class 37’s on loaded test runs so that the repaired generator could be checked properly. No problems were discovered on the test runs and the loco was passed as fit to go to the Swanage Railway diesel gala held between Friday 8th and Sunday 10th May.

The convoy of locos for the Swanage diesel gala were booked to be hauled by 55022 on Wednesday 6th May but on the day paperwork issues with 55022 meant that 55022 did not depart the East Lancs Railway. With the paperwork issues resolved, the move was booked for the following day with 55022 booked to run light engine from Bury to Barrow Hill to collect 20107, 26007 and 45060 before setting off for the Midland Railway Centre to pick up 31108. 55022 departed Bury 85 minutes late as 0Z55 on the 09:30 scheduled start and ran to Barrow Hill where a 47 minute late arrival was recorded. 55022+20107+26007+45060 then departed Barrow Hill on time at 14:00 for the short journey to the Midland Railway Centre where arrival was 6 minutes late at 15:08.

Once 31108 had been added to the convoy, 0Z55 departed the MRC at 16:15, 45 minutes late in the formation 55022+45060+26007+20107+31108 and ran via Toton, Loughborough, Leicester, Kettering, Bedford, Acton Wells Junction, Staines, Woking, Basingstoke, Southampton, Poole and Wareham, arriving at the Network Rail boundary with the Swanage Railway at 01:17! The convoy had only just beaten an engineering blockade near Eastleigh.

45060 put in an impeccable performance over the 3 day diesel gala which was well attended and at which the very sunny weather was perfect for photography on and around the scenic railway. On the Saturday in addition to hauling services through the day, 45060 hauled the evening dining train. Over the three day event 45060 clocked up over 150 fault free miles. It had been a long road over the previous two years for the restoration team since the loco suffered a generator flashover, but the success of the loco at the diesel gala made it worthwhile.

With the visiting locos staying at Swanage for a further week following the diesel gala prior to heading for the Eastleigh Open Day event, a visiting loco was selected to loco haul the booked DMU services on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th May. 45060 was allocated to haul the DMU services on Saturday 16th May, which included evening services – a total of 10 return trips from Swanage to Norden. In the event the loco worked the first 4 booked DMU services before being replaced by the DMU! As many people had travelled a long way the Railway agreed to top and tail the evening dining train with 45060 and steam loco 34028.

On Monday 18th May, 55022 hauled 0Y45 the 09:38 Motala ground frame (the mainline connection from the Swanage Railway with Network Rail) to Eastleigh. 55022 hauled 45060, 31108, 33108 and 33103 in the convoy and the locos were put on display at a very popular Open day event over the following weekend. On Thursday 28th May, following the movement of 20107 and 26007 from the Swanage Railway to Eastleigh, 55022 hauled 31108, 45060, 20107 and 26007 back north as 0M55 which departed Eastleigh 15 minutes late at 09:29. The return journey was via Basingstoke, Woking, Staines, Acton Wells Junction and the Midland Mainline, with a 30 minute early arrival recorded at Barrow Hill at 16:35.

Updated 4/4/09

45060 Sherwood Forester has had its nose end crown fitted as well as the 2 nose end grills. On both sides of the nose end, new steel work has been welded in under the grills. At number 1 end the roof vents have been removed from the cab roof, the holes welded up and the vents refitted but with the holes filled in. The vents were to give the loco cab an air-flow at higher speeds but in preservation at low speeds they are ineffective. It has been found that the roof vents allow rainwater into the cab and as a consequence many of the preserved peaks have had their vents sealed. All of the rotten steel work around the cab door at the driver’s side at number 2 end has been cut out and replaced.

Inside the loco, 5 overhauled resistor panels have been refitted as well as the wiring to these panels renewed. The field divert resistor panels have also been refitted as well as the battery charge rectifier. This has allowed the locos boiler room roof to be refitted.

Work on the locos generator has progressed well over the last few weeks and the bottom windings for the generator were put in and around 10 of the top windings completed. All of the end clips were soldered on to the commutator and then the windings were tested which revealed that some of the old windings were giving poor readings. Because of this, it was decided to re-solder the old windings as well. All of the cables in the auxiliary generator have been renewed and the auxiliary generator and generator field frames have been bolted together as well as the brush boxes being re-fitted to the brush ring.

New bandings were put on to the armature and then varnish was poured into the core of the armature. The windings were then varnished and the armature baked in an oven for 12 hours. The armature was then sent to Chesterfield to be balanced and the commutator to be skimmed. When the armature returned it was positioned into the generator field frame and the turn buckles were put on to support the armature in a central position. A new bearing was also fitted at this point.

The generator arrived back at Barrow Hill on Saturday 21st March and was craned into the loco mid afternoon. The two drive flanges were then bolted together. By the evening of Monday 23rd March the generator was bolted down in position following alignment by two ex-Derby Works loco men. The following weekend saw the completion of the work on the generator with all of the bus bars and brushes re-fitted. In addition to this, the turbo charger has been refitted and the labyrinth sealing plates have been put back on with new seals. The loco has been filled up with water and pressure tested without problem and a start of 45060 is hoped for over Easter when the locos silencer has been fitted.

Photo site http://carl9188.fotopic.net/ is regularly updated with the on-going work on 45060 (and 45105) and recent updates show the work on the generator as well as its installation in the loco in addition to other work completed on 45060 and 45105. It is hoped that the repairs to 45060 will allow the loco to take up its invite to appear at the Swanage Diesel Gala, which this year is being held between Friday 8th and Sunday 10th May 2009. 45060 has also been provisionally booked to haul the Swanage diesel diagram on Saturday 16th May.  No work has been undertaken on 45105 during the period under review as the team at Barrow Hill have been concentrating on the restoration of 45060.

Updated 1/2/09

45060 Sherwood Forester has had new steel welded into the nose end floor at number 1 end where two air tanks stand. The air tanks themselves were sent away for pressure testing which they passed and they have been refitted to the loco. The instrument panel has been completed with a partial rewire and new stands have been fitted for the bulb holders. A new back panel for the instrument panel, with an access panel at the rear has also been fitted. The nose end has required considerable welding around the headcode boxes as Tinsley only tack welded them into place and used filler on any holes!

The nose end was re-fitted back into place on New Years Day and bolted down. The nose end has had new steel strips welded in along the top where the nose end grilles are fitted. The 2 headcode boxes for number 1 end have required some rebuilding where the steel had corroded. The 4 headcode box hinges needed soaking in diesel fuel to free them off, before the headcode boxes were refitted. The nose end crown from number one end was also found to have corroded badly which has meant that all of the rotten steel work needed to be cut out with new metal welded in.

In the locos boiler room the opportunity has been taken to take up the floor plates alongside the boiler. Surprisingly, even though 3 vacuum cleaner loads of rubbish and corroded metal were removed, the air pipes under the floor were found to be in a good condition. The five resistor panels have been removed, cleaned up and have been painted with anti track paint (which protects and insulates electrical equipment as well as reducing short circuits, electrical leakage, accidental flashover and corrosion), before being varnished. The traction motor field divert banks have also been cleaned and anti tracked as has the battery charge rectifier. All of these items wait re-fitting.

Under the loco all 6 air tanks have been removed and wait testing. Work on the generator has progressed to the point where all of the windings for the top and bottom layer have been shaped into place, taped and the end insulation has been cut and coated with solder. Pictures of the work undertaken on 45060 to re-instate its headcode boxes together with regular updates on it and 45105 can be found at http://carl9188.fotopic.net/

It is hoped that the on-going repairs to 45060 will allow the loco to accept an invite to the Swanage Diesel Gala which this year is being held from May 8th - 10th 2009.

Updated 5/12/08

45060 Sherwood Forester was brought inside the roundhouse at Barrow Hill on Sunday 19th October taking the place of 45105. The locos no1 end nose end was removed to allow a nose end with headcode boxes to be refitted. You may recall that 45060 had its number 1 nose end changed from headcode boxes to a nose end with marker lights in June 2002. The loco was fitted with box headcodes as part of its refurbishment following preservation, back in September 1987 when it was also painted into green livery and numbered D100.

The air tanks located in the nose end at number 2 have been removed as well as some of the air pipes to them as the nose end floor needs replacing. The rear of the cab instrument panel box was also badly corroded where the bottom of the box had totally corroded away. A replacement box has been fabricated and is in place after the surrounding area was prepared with a needle gun and primer paint. The conduit that feeds the instrument panel box fell apart due to corrosion and 2 new runs of 25mm conduit have been put in place. Rewiring of the instrument panel has begun.

The whole engine room/boiler room has been steam cleaned and the boiler room roof was taken off to allow all of the resistor panels taken out. It is planned for all of the resistor panels to be replaced. One of the removed resistor panels had a sticker on it stating it had been fitted to 45071 previously. It is also planned that the large rectifier unit found in the boiler room will be replaced as the one in 45060 is badly corroded. The traction motor resistor panel will also be removed for overhaul and this will allow the area to be scraped back to bare metal and repainted.

45060’s generator repairs are continuing with some 90 clips having been made to go on the end of the windings. Regular updates about the work on 45060 and 45105 can be found at http://carl9188.fotopic.net/

45060 has provisionally been booked to appear at the Swanage Diesel Gala, Friday 8th until Sunday 10th May 2009 after it missed out this year due to its generator problems.
